Many of us heard about the Tyreek Hill detained by police on Sunday before the Miami Dolphins football game. Especially if you are a football fan like me. Well today the bodycam of this embarrassing and troubling incident was released and it has caused a lot of on intense conversation. While discussing the Tyreek Hill body cam video release. I will share how to prevent negative police interactions.
You can watch this video interaction below. I must note that both citizens and police can do a better job in police interactions. And that as a nation and society we owe it to each other to not be bias. But to spread information and justice.
James 2:1 My dear brothers and sisters, how can you claim to have faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ if you favor some people over others?
According to this Fox news Report on Tyreek Hill police detainment. One of the police officers did not know that it was Tyreek Hill. And it really should not matter who it was that the police pulled over. Everyone should be treated the same no matter their fame, fortune, race or anything else.
I believe that Tyreek Hill had a major sense of entitlement. I am Tyreek Hill multi million dollar football player. I own this city and I am super important. We have our first game of the season and I can 't be late. So why are you pulling me over. When the police officer pulled Tyreek over. Tyreek lost it and went into I don 't like police officer mode.
Tyreek Hill thought he was going to get special treatment and he did not get it. Or it maybe that when you have that much money. You just don 't care if you get arrested. You feel that you can do whatever you want to do. This caused the police officer to meet his energy with police authority. Which is in his right. Especially when the citizen gives you cause to do so.
I want to use this as a teaching moment. Because at times police officers surely let people get off because they are " someone important " and " above the law" That is why I am sharing some scriptures that I hope will help us have a much fairer society. Where no one is giving special treatment because they are rich or poor.
James 2:1
1 My dear brothers and sisters, how can you claim to have faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ if you favor some people over others?
2 For example, suppose someone comes into your meetings dressed in fancy clothes and expensive jewelry, and another comes in who is poor and dressed in dirty clothes. 3 If you give special attention and a good seat to the rich person, but you say to the poor one, “You can stand over there, or else sit on the floor”—well, 4 doesn’t this discrimination show that your judgments are guided by evil motives?
5 Listen to me, dear brothers and sisters. Hasn’t God chosen the poor in this world to be rich in faith? Aren’t they the ones who will inherit the Kingdom he promised to those who love him? 6 But you dishonor the poor! Isn’t it the rich who oppress you and drag you into court? 7 Aren’t they the ones who slander Jesus Christ, whose noble name you bear?
8 Yes indeed, it is good when you obey the royal law as found in the Scriptures: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” 9 But if you favor some people over others, you are committing a sin. You are guilty of breaking the law.
10 For the person who keeps all of the laws except one is as guilty as a person who has broken all of God’s laws. 11 For the same God who said, “You must not commit adultery,” also said, “You must not murder.” So if you murder someone but do not commit adultery, you have still broken the law.
12 So whatever you say or whatever you do, remember that you will be judged by the law that sets you free. 13 There will be no mercy for those who have not shown mercy to others. But if you have been merciful, God will be merciful when he judges you.
In the video Tyreek Hill is heard saying take me to jail bro. I would of said take you to jail? Will do sir. You have the right to remain silent. You have the right to an attorney. Anything thing you say will be used against you in a court of law. Ha ha!
But all jokes aside. On Sunday after hearing that Hill was either arrested or detained before the game. But his agent Drew Rosenhaus reported that he would be playing in the Dolphins home opener. I said it would be really cool if Tyreek scored a touchdown and did a celebration where he was on the ground being arrested.
And guess what happened? Today while watching the game highlights Tyreek did just that. Tyreek is known for his outstanding touchdown celebrations like when he did a back flip in the end zone after a big touchdown. That was nice!
I have to give Tyreek an A for having a sense of humor. But I do also want to hear Tyreek apologize to the police and the city of Miami for his behavior.
When I first saw this video I thought that both the officer and Tyreek was in the wrong. But after watching the video again I feel as if the police officer did nothing wrong.
When being pulled over the Miami Dade Police officer for speeding. The police officer approached the Miami Dolphins star Wide Receiver 's car and proceeded to knock on his window. Hill then repeatedly told the officer not to knock on his window. The police officer has a very thick Hispanic accent. And it sounds like someone in the car is mocking his accent.
After the police officer tells Tyreek not to roll his window up. Tyreek rolls his window up. And that is when the officers commands Hill to roll his window down. Hill finally complies but his attitude seems to push the officer to escalate the situation and pull Tyreek out of the car.
Earlier this year I was stopped by the police in a park. I will be sharing with you my own negative police interaction in a blog coming soon. But for now let me say to you that I understand the mindset that many African Americans have when interacting with police officers. As an African American myself I have falling victim of this troubling mindset. And I am a Christian conservative. So when I hear stories of African Americans like Tyreek Hill having attitudes with the police for no reason. I think I understand why that is.
As an African American before you even meet the police you are trained to have something bad in your head. So when the police use their authority on you it is on. This gives that police interaction an increased opportunity to end badly.
In this case Tyreek is very disrespectful and belligerent toward the police officer without good cause. I believe that he set the police officer off. I believe the police officer had a reason to feel threatened. When a belligerent citizen rolls up his window in his vehicle. In which he has already used in a very suspect way by speeding up as the police officer pulled him over.
I do not know how the police officer could of handled this situation better. This is backed up by the The Miami Dade Police Union Statement. The Police Union is also defending the police officers actions.
Steadman Stahl, the president of the South Florida Police Benevolent Association said,
"Upon being stopped, Mr. Hill was not immediately cooperative with the officers on scene who, pursuant to policy and for their immediate safety, placed Mr. Hill in handcuffs. Mr. Hill, still uncooperative, refused to sit on the ground and was therefore redirected to the ground,"
This statement is telling. I am very glad that the police department both released the dash cam video quickly so that we the people could see what happened. This protects the citizens and the police officers. But I am also glad that the police department and union did not cave to public outcry of the officers handling of this traffic stop.
